Do you want to add a back to album button to your image gallery? A back button is an important feature for your users if you have multiple image galleries inside an album. In this article, we will share how to display a back to album link in WordPress galleries.

Any photo album with galleries should include a “Back to Album” link. This navigation helps your visitors to easily browse through your various galleries. However, WordPress does not include the option for a back to album link by default.

To display back to album link in a WordPress gallery, you’ll need to follow these 6 steps:

  • Step 1. Install and activate Envira Gallery plugin
  • Step 2. Install and activate the Albums and Standalone Addons
  • Step 3. Create a photo album in Envira
  • Step 4. Disable lightbox view for image galleries
  • Step 5. Enable the display back to album link
  • Step 6. Add photo album to WordPress post

By the end of this tutorial, you will have an image gallery with a back to album link that looks like this:

Ready to get started? Let’s go!

Step 1: Install and Activate Envira Gallery Plugin

First thing you need to do is to install and activate Envira Gallery WordPress plugin.

Once you’ve installed and activated Envira Gallery, you can start creating photo galleries. To learn more, check out our guide on how to create an image gallery with Envira.

Step 2: Install and Activate Envira’s Albums and Standalone Addon

Upon activating the plugin, you need to go to Envira Gallery » Addons from your WordPress backend.

Then install and activate the Albums Addon and the Standalone Addon.

Albums and Standalone Addon

(Note: You must have Envira’s Pro or Ultimate license to access these two addons.)

Step 3: Create a Photo Album in Envira

After installing and activating the two addons, you can go to Envira Gallery » Albums. Then click on the Add New button at the top.

Add Album

Start by adding a title for your photo album.

You will notice all of your image galleries are there in the Galleries section. Choose the galleries you would like to add to this photo album.

Add Galleries

Once you’ve selected the galleries you’d like to include, click on the Publish button.

Go ahead and copy the shortcode from the Envira Album Code widget. (You’ll need this shortcode to display your photo album in step 6 below.)

Step 4: Disable Lightbox View for Image Galleries

Since we want to display a back to album link, we’ll need to disable lightbox view for our photo galleries. So instead of opening the galleries in a lightbox, they will open up in a new page.

To disable lightbox view, go to the Lightbox tab and uncheck the Enable Lightbox option.

Disable Lightbox

Step 5: Enable the Display Back to Album Link

Now it’s time to add our back to album link. Go to the Config settings, and checkmark the “Display Back to Album Link?” option.

Enable Display Back to Album Link

Make sure to Update your photo album to save your changes.

Step 6: Add Photo Album to WordPress Post

To add your photo album into a WordPress post or page, you can go to Posts/Pages » Add New, or edit an existing post.

Then, simply paste the shortcode (that you copied in step 3) into the visual editor, and click on the Update button.

Add Shortcode
