Display Image Titles Below Thumbnails

Do you want to display image titles below the thumbnails in your gallery? Envira makes it easy. Follow this guide to show titles below your gallery images.

First, edit your gallery and click on the Config tab to enable the Title to show under each image:

Click the checkbox next to the Title and click Update to save the changes to the gallery

A: In order to automatically enable titles for all galleries, add the following to your theme’s functions.php:

add_filter('envira_gallery_themes_override_showing_title', 'example_envira_gallery_themes_override_showing_title', 10, 6 );
function example_envira_gallery_themes_override_showing_title( $show_yes_or_no, $caption, $id, $item, $data, $i ) {
          return true;

A: Please make sure you have selected a column layout from the Number of Gallery Columns in the dropdown. When the Automatic gallery is selected, the option to show the Title or Caption checkbox will not appear.

A: Absolutely! Using some CSS we can change how the caption appears. Let’s add some styling to those captions┬áto really make them pop. I’m going to add the following to my individual gallery’s Custom CSS field (using the CSS Addon):

#envira-gallery-wrap-190 .envira-gallery-item-inner span.envira-title {
    color: #6b6b6b;
    font-size: 14px !important;
    text-transform: capitalize;
    padding: 5px 0;

Now you can see the title is more visually pleasing and provides some space between thumbnail images.

A: If you are using the Automatic gallery, only the caption text will show on hover.

If any title text is entered for the image, when hovering over the image it will be displayed as a tooltip by default. This is the default behavior by browsers. You can remove the title attribute that you see on the image when hovering by unchecking the ‘Title’ on the Config tab.
